Delivering Impact

The Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation Center Seed Grant program is already delivering innovative bio-based solutions that are bringing in new extramural funding and creating pathways for new start-ups.

The six seed grants awarded in 2024 have led to the following outcomes:

  • Matched federal funding and follow-on solicitations for state funding
  • One publication (pending)
  • Entrance for one research team into the Min-Corps program, admission to the national NSF I-corps program, and applications for federal SBIR funding

Biotechnology & Biomanufacturing Seed Grants Awardees - 2025/6

The University of Minnesota’s Research & Innovation Office (RIO) and the Biotechnology & Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (BBIC) are pleased to announce the 2025/6 awardees of the Biotechnology & Biomanufacturing Seed Grants. Three interdisciplinary teams have been selected for support, advancing Minnesota’s leadership in biomanufacturing, bio-based materials, agricultural innovation, and environmental biotechnology. Three projects received $261,833 in funding through August 31, 2026.  

2025–2026 BBIC Mini-Grant Opportunity

The Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (BBIC) Mini-Grant Program provides funding to support cross-disciplinary projects that advance biotechnology-based discovery and prototype solutions, accelerating the next wave of advanced biomanufacturing. Each year, BBIC anticipates awarding approximately 10 mini-grants, each up to $5,000. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.

FY2025-2026 BBIC Seed Research Grant Opportunity

The Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (BBIC) at the University of Minnesota announces its FY2025-2026 Seed Research Grant program. This initiative supports cross-disciplinary, high-impact projects that leverage Minnesota’s resources and foster partnerships with government, industry, higher education, and community stakeholders to advance biomanufacturing innovation.
