Partnership process

From ideation to implementation, MnBA follows a structured process to turn discovery into impact:

1. Idea Formation 

In collaboration with industry and other external partners, MnBA identifies key priorities and opportunities for projects with University of Minnesota expertise and facilities. This early engagement ensures that research priorities align with economic, environmental, and societal needs.

2. Research and Development 

Once ideas are defined, MnBA catalyzes teams that bring together cross-disciplinary expertise in fields including biotechnology, engineering, data science, agricultural, food and natural sciences. These teams refine their research and develop approaches with clear translational potential.

3. Proof of Concept

Projects advance to laboratory and pilot-scale testing, where new materials, processes, or technologies are validated. At this stage, MnBA provides funding, access to shared facilities, and technical support to help researchers generate data and demonstrate feasibility.

4. Application and Scaling

Successful projects are guided toward application and growth through partnerships with industry and state or federal agencies. MnBA supports the translation of research findings into viable technologies, manufacturing methods, or commercial opportunities that contribute to Minnesota’s bioindustrial capacity.

5. Impact and Evaluation 

Outcomes are assessed through measurable indicators related to new products, intellectual property, external funding, partnerships, and workforce training pathways. Continuous evaluation ensures that MnBA initiatives deliver tangible value to the university, the state, and the broader bioeconomy.
